My Natural Kidney Support Diet

Not A Cure For Kidney Disease

Not A Cure For Kidney Disease i

Any cat caregivers' worst nightmare is learning one day their beloved friend has a terminal disease.   The initial reaction to the diagnosis may be a feeling of helplessness and despair.  While feline chronic renal failure (CRF) is progressive and terminal, with an early diagnosis, a lot of love, patience, and dedication the condition may be managed effectively for some time.  There is no cure for renal disease, but there is hope in stabilizing and maintaining a good quality of life for your cat.  If you are reading this then you are searching for that hope.  It is proven that a natural raw food diet can be very beneficial to cats (and dogs) with mild to moderate renal failure.  Feline Instincts® My Natural Kidney Support Formular is a premix supplement provides the basis for such a diet.  Our holistic veterinarian have this to say about our Kidney Support Diet

Dr. Anna Maria Gardner on CRF

A natural raw food diet can be very beneficial to cats with mild to moderate renal failure, who are under veterinarian care. Feline Instincts’ My Natural Kidney Support diet is modified to contain lower protein and higher fat, with B- vitamins that are so essential in renal failure. The kidneys can manage the lower protein intake and yet still enjoy the benefits of a raw food diet which is so much healthier for their bodies. Your holistic veterinarian can also prescribe natural remedies to help support your cat’s kidneys along with this diet.”

Anna Maria Gardner DVM, M.A. M.B. Holistic Veterinarian www.petsynergy.com

In addition to the diet I recommend a kidney tablet supplement called "Renafood" from Standard Process. This tablet is a very good renal detoxifier and helps to maximize kidney function in cats. Give one a day. We give this to all our cats to help prevent early stages of renal failure from the age of 6 years old. None our cats had renal issues and they all lived to 19 and 20. Most cats eat them readily alone or crushed with a sprinkle of our liver powder. We do not add to food so that it works on the kidneys alone. Call Standard Process at 1-800-558-8740 to find a distributor in your area. Renafood is a human product, which in my experience works just as good as their cat product Feline Renal Support which costs more and you get less tablets. So be sure to insist on Renafood. You can also find Renafood online at many health stores or ask me to add a bottle to your order from my personal stock.

Another good kidney support pill used in addtion with the renafood tablet and our raw kidney diet is Kidney Essentials by VetriScience. This is also available online at www.amazon.com.

Please keep in mind that all allopathic vets do not relate to raw kidney diets as well as homeopathic vets do. When fed a raw diet you really don’t have to pay close attention to the phos or protein as much because it is the quality not the quantity that makes the difference. If you’re dealing with commercially processed foods like Science diet then you would look for the low levels. Taking good quality protein from a cat will slowly kill her.

Remember too that allopathic vets are schooled for Science Diet recipes only, not raw diets. Contact Dr Gardner for a good second opinion (or any of the vets listed on my website) and you’ll see my point. Dr Gardner can also send you additional kidney support for your kitty like she does for mine. None of my cats had kidney issues when they passed away at ages 19-21 years old. That is 96-100 years old in their lifetime too.

Most Holistic veterinarians prescribe “Renafood” by Standard Process to go along with our raw kidney diet. Our 15 year study showed that cats creatine levels are decreased significantly on this additional supplement along with our My Natural Kidney Support Diet. Your holistic veterinarian may also have other natural remedies that will work so please ask them about Standard Process supplements.

My Natural Kidney Diet ™

Not a cure for renal disease

Recipe Ingredients

.

  1. 1 cup of filtered or distilled water
  2. ½ cup of "My Natural Kidney Support” supplement powder.
  3. 2 lbs. boneless skinless meats; 50/50 chicken thighs and breast or all chicken thighs. Also, all dark ground turkey is good.
  4. 1 cup of raw liver: Use chicken liver for chicken & turkey.  (Don't use beef or lamb meats because some cats will throw up beef meats). For liver powders use 6 level Tablespoons of chicken liver power. Skip the liver if you ordered the diet supplement with chicken liver powder in it.
  5. 1.5 LB canned pumpkin ( or steamed squash peeled & seeded. See below)
  6. 4 Salmon Oil Capsules (4000 mg) or 2 strokes of the salmon oil pump.

Mixing

  • Add water to bowl, puncture and squeeze salmon capsules in water and stir.
  • Add pureed liver & chopped, ground or diced meat and stir gently.
  • Add the "My Natural Kidney Support” powder and stir gently until mixed well with liver and water.
  • Add 1.5 pounds of canned plain pumpkin. OR Peel, seed and chop fresh squashes. Then cook well in a vegetable steamer and puree thoroughly in a blender or food processor. Set aside to cool. NO other veggie  can be used because squash gives the cat the fiber and extra water they need.

Saving meals:

Weigh or measure daily meals in freezer baggies, ice cube trays or small plastic or glass containers and freeze. I use pint size Zip Lock freezer bags then freeze in large flat Tupperware boxes, separating each layer with paper towels so they will not freeze together. Label and date you frozen recipes.

.

Keep meals frozen for up to 6 months and keep thawed 2-3 days. Don’t leave food out for feeding more then 1/2 hour, then put back in fridge.

How to warm meals:

Use a glass bowl or stainless steel bowl, fill the sink with very hot tap water, add the meat recipe to the bowl, cover the bowl and stir now and then until it warmed. I feel it with the tips of my fingers to see if it’s warm. It’s very quick and you don’t get the toxins from the plastic that way.

Yields 18 x 1/2 portions.  All ingredients of this recipe are essential. Replacing or omitting ingredients will interrupt the nutritional balance.

Serve 1/2 - 3/4 cup twice a day or as directed by your vet .

Tips to switch Kitty to a raw diet:

1. I personally do not believe in fasting a cat to make them eat a raw diet. It’s never worked for me or anyone we know.

2. Try using our chicken Liver powder on the meals. Everyone says it works really well. Our cats at Feline Instincts often won’t eat the turkey meals unless we sprinkle some Chicken Liver Powder or Halo Liv A Little's chicken treats crumbled on the meals. Both are excellent enticements and can be ordered from our ordering page.

In addition to the above enticements, we also use a baby food by Earth's Best babies first soup Butternut Squash with Chicken - 6 months or order baby food. Our older cats lick it up on plate alone in between meals and on tops of their meals. This is an excellent addition to in between meals when you have a kidney challenged kitty or dog.

3. All cats will walk away from food that doesn't smell familiar to them. Try putting some on their lips to make them taste it. Pet them and tell them it’s good.

4. Mix any kind of food they like to the raw meal just to get them to eat it; chicken broth, beef broth, salmon or tuna juice. Then, gradually take away that extra food you mixed in each time you feed them until they are eating just the raw meal.

5. Take up ALL dry foods as they are very addictive to cats because of the addicting flavor enticements the commercial pet food companies spray on those cereal junk foods. If your cat knows it's around she will opt for that instead of the raw foods anytime. And cats know how to do the waiting game better then we do.

6. Sometimes, it takes a little while to switch a kitty over to a raw diet. But more then often if a cat is reluctant to eat the raw meals it only takes a few days to a week or two if you really try

7. Stools will be firm and less often (about 3-4 days apart) because there is very little waste when fed a raw diet. Email me if you have any questions.

8. IMPORTANT
Some cats throw up raw beef and beef liver powder.   If you do not know your kitty can tolerate beef raw then I recommend you use only poultry until you test you cat with a piece of raw beef first. Contact me for more help if you have any questions.

Tips on giving pills..Most cats will eat the Feline Renal Support tablets or the Renafood tablets by Standard Process like a treat just like they do the other tablets they make.
1.Crush them into a powder if kitty won't eat them straight out or if you don't want to pill the cat.
2.Take crushed pills and lace it with just a little chicken liver powder or baby food squash and chicken meals...6 months or order baby food.

Do not mix them in foods it would dilute the pill too much.  You want them to work directly on the kidneys alone.
